How are kitchen knife skills a self-reliance topic? It is actually pretty easy to see when you think about it. We all know that cooking is a key self-reliance skill. You really can’t be self-reliant without it. One of the most common things to do it cooking is cutting.
I have found that cooking is more enjoyable when you have a good knife and the skill to use it. I discovered an excellent video on a site called “Craftsy”. The video is titled “Complete Knife Skills”. It will teach you these skills and much more for free. The instructor is awesome and covers a lot of material on the basics of how to use various knives, but also how to cut specific vegetables. Wait til you see how he peels an entire head of garlic….genius!
One thing is that he does is recommend certain types of knives (Chef’s knife, serrated utility knife, and a paring knife) that every home should have. After doing some research, I have settled on the below. The quality and cost are the main drivers for this selection. I will be ordering mine soon.
Victorinox 10 Inch Fibrox Pro Chef’s Knife
Victorinox 10.25 Inch Serrated Bread Knife with Fibrox Handle, 47547
Victorinox 4 Inch Swiss Classic Paring Knife, Spear Point
Check out the video and let me know what you think.
